The Nebraska Transportation Center and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering will host the next Transportation Engineering Seminar Series presentation on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. Central Time. Dr. Shi'an Wang will present “Connecting Vehicles, Traffic, and Intelligence: Toward Safer, more Efficient, and Sustainable Transportation Cyber-physical Systems (T-CPS).”

Connected and autonomous vehicles can help stabilize traffic flow, reduce energy consumption and enhance urban mobility. However, mixed-autonomy traffic presents challenges as connected and autonomous vehicles share the road with human-driven vehicles and respond to uncertain, changing traffic conditions.

During the seminar, Wang will present a unified framework for transportation cyber-physical systems that connects microscopic vehicle control with macroscopic traffic flow theory. The presentation will explore real-time vehicle feedback control, traffic-state prediction, and the co-optimization of vehicle speed and powertrain. Dr. Wang will also discuss evaluations using real-world traffic data and how intelligent, safety-aware control can contribute to safer, more sustainable and resilient urban mobility.

Dr. Shi'an Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Wang earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Transportation) from the University of Minnesota. Research integrates traffic flow theory, control engineering, optimization and machine learning, with applications in connected and automated vehicles, mixed-autonomy traffic, future urban mobility and transportation cybersecurity.
