Driving Simulator Lab

Explore flexible driving simulation systems built for controlled, repeatable, and immersive experiences.

Why

Real-world driving situations in a safe, controlled environment.

The NTC Driving Simulator Lab can recreate roadway, traffic, and environmental conditions without putting participants on public roads. Scenarios can be repeated adjusted and measured for demonstrations, training, education, and project-specific testing.

Immersive

Realistic cockpits, broad visual fields, sound, motion and vehicle controls.

Configurable

Adjust roads, traffic, weather, lighting, vehicles and events.

Measurable

Record driving performance, system data and in-cab video.

Repeatable

Run consistent scenarios across participants and applications.

Research Directions

Explore driver behavior and human factors, health and accessibility, cognition and decision-making, emerging vehicle technologies, high-risk driving scenarios, and traffic operations.

Education & Outreach

Support course demonstrations, hands-on student projects, graduate research, public demonstrations, K–12 and STEM activities, and engagement with industry, agencies, and the community.

Training & Workforce Development

Use controlled driving scenarios for driver safety assessment, hazard recognition and response, and workforce development.

Truck Driving Simulator

$64.82 per Day

Put drivers behind truck-specific controls and build customizable commercial-vehicle scenarios with an integrated co-simulation platform.

  • Truck cockpit and driving-control hardware
  • Heavy-truck dynamics through TruckSim
  • 3D roadway environments through CARLA
  • Traffic-flow simulation through SUMO
  • Dynamic weather and lighting
  • Camera, LiDAR, radar, GNSS, and IMU sensor simulation
  • Python/C++ interfaces and truck-performance data recording

What it can Do

Recreate truck-driving environments, vary traffic and operating conditions, simulate onboard sensors, and capture vehicle-performance data for demonstrations, training and testing.

  • Person using a vehicle simulator with three screens displaying the road and interior view.
  • Group of students observing another student driving a truck simulator
  • Person operating a driving simulator with multiple screens.
  • Person using a driving simulator with three monitors displaying urban street scenes.

Car miniSim Simulator

$77.04 per Hour

The NADS miniSim AV Driving System combines a real vehicle cockpit with a curved visual environment, motion, sound and integrated data capture.

  • 180-degree horizontal field of view
  • Three-degree-of-freedom motion base
  • Vibration feedback and sound
  • Four in-cab HD video feeds
  • Automated-driving mode and switch
  • Custom roads, traffic, weather and lighting
  • Scenario and event programming with data recording

What it can Do

Immerse drivers in custom passenger-vehicle scenarios, reproduce changing road and weather conditions, model automated-driving interactions, and capture driving data and in-cab video.
