MATC Celebrates USDOT $15 Million Grant Award

On September 26, the Mid-America Transportation Center for Transportation Safety and Equity (MATC-TSE) team of faculty, students, and staff were welcomed in a celebration reception at the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center to hear from Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development Dr. Bob Wilhelm, Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Lance Perez, Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering Dr. Mark Riley, and Dr. Aemal Khattak. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Rodney Bennett was also in attendance and extended his congratulations.

MATC-TSE, led by Director Dr. Aemal Khattak, received the US Department of Transportation $15 million grant administered through the US Department of Transportation’s University Transportation Centers program. In place since 1987, this grant period is focused on improving transportation safety with a focus on equity. MATC first won the competition in 1995 and again in 2006, 2011, and 2016. The center will receive $3 million per year for the next five years, with the specific goal of improving transportation safety and equity through research and outreach.

Along with other researchers at UNL, partners in this grant include the Nebraska Indian Community College, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Iowa, University of Kansas, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
