On July 13, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the University of Nebraska came together at NDOT Headquarters for the NDOT–University of Nebraska Research Summit, a collaborative event designed to connect transportation professionals and researchers while identifying opportunities for future research partnerships.
The summit began with welcome remarks from Mick Syslo, NDOT Deputy Director–Engineering, who emphasized the value of collaboration between academia and transportation agencies in addressing Nebraska's evolving transportation challenges. Following the welcome, Mark Fischer, Assistant Materials & Research Engineer and Research Program Manager, provided an overview of NDOT's research program.
Dr. Nathan Huynh, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Nebraska Transportation Center (NTC), introduced attendees to the services and resources NTC provides to support NDOT research proposals and shared the impact that NTC is making in transportation engineering through education and outreach opportunities.
The morning continued with presentations from University of Nebraska faculty and staff, who shared examples of current transportation-related research taking place across the university. The presentations highlighted a wide range of projects and demonstrated the depth of transportation expertise available within the University's research community.
Representatives from several NDOT divisions introduced themselves, discussed the roles and responsibilities of their departments, and shared areas of research interest. These presentations provided faculty and staff with valuable insight into the transportation challenges facing the agency and identified potential opportunities for future collaboration.
To encourage continued discussion and relationship-building, the Nebraska Transportation Center hosted a networking lunch following the presentations. The lunch gave NDOT employees and University of Nebraska faculty and staff an opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and discuss future transportation research possibilities in an informal setting.
The NDOT–University of Nebraska Research Summit reinforced the shared commitment of both organizations to advancing transportation research, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships that will help address Nebraska's transportation needs for years to come.
