Optimizing the Location of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The Nebraska Transportation Center (NTC) will host the next Transportation Engineering Seminar Series presentation,Optimizing the Location of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations,” on Friday, September 11, 2026. The seminar will be presented by Dr. Akmal Abdelfatah, Professor of Civil Engineering at the American University of Sharjah.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to increase, access to convenient charging infrastructure has become a critical transportation challenge. Dr. Abdelfatah's seminar will explore how traffic simulation and optimization techniques can be used to identify effective locations for EV charging stations, helping reduce travel and wait times while improving service for drivers.

The research uses the DYNASMART traffic simulation platform to model electric vehicle operations under different traffic conditions and levels of EV adoption. An optimization model then determines the best locations for charging stations from a set of potential sites, balancing factors such as travel time, waiting time, and the number of stations needed.

Dr. Abdelfatah's research interests include transportation systems electrification, dynamic traffic assignment, transportation planning, traffic operations, and intelligent transportation systems applications. He has served as a researcher, consultant, editor, and conference organizer in the transportation engineering field.

Participants may attend in person at UNL or remotely via Zoom and will earn one Professional Development Hour (PDH) for attending the seminar.
