On July 7, 2026, the Nebraska Transportation Center (NTC) partnered with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to host Moving Transportation in Nebraska and Beyond at Whittier. The course was led by Dr. Nathan Huynh, NTC Director and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and he was joined by Dr. Richard Wood, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Dr. Hongfeng Yu, Director of the Holland Computing Center and Professor in the School of Computing, to introduce participants to transportation engineering, emerging technologies, and the important role transportation plays in everyday life.
Through interactive discussions, attendees learned how transportation systems are designed, how engineers improve safety and mobility, and how NTC advances transportation research, education, and outreach across Nebraska and beyond. The course also highlighted the future of transportation, including autonomous and connected vehicle technologies.
Participants also heard from Dr. Ron Faller, director of the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF), who shared how the organization works to improve roadway safety through research, testing, and innovation. The program concluded with a sneak peek of NTC's new Half Cab miniSim driving simulator, giving attendees a firsthand look at the advanced research tools used to study driver behavior and transportation safety.
The event reflected NTC's commitment to community engagement and lifelong learning by providing participants with an engaging, behind-the-scenes look at transportation research and its real-world impact.
