The Nebraska Transportation Center and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering invite students, faculty, practitioners, and community members to attend the next Transportation Engineering Seminar Series presentation on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Dr. Jiachao Liu, Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, will present “Learning and Optimization in Curb-aware Transportation Networks.”
The presentation will explore the growing importance of curb space within urban transportation systems. As ride-hailing services, robotaxis, on-demand deliveries, micromobility options, and electric vehicles continue to increase demand for curb access, competition for these limited public assets has intensified. The seminar will introduce a theoretical framework that models curb and road infrastructure systems together, capturing curbside activities and their effects on transportation network performance. The framework uses large-scale, heterogeneous data to better understand curb usage behavior and network flow patterns and to support the development of curbside pricing strategies intended to improve system efficiency.
Dr. Liu is an Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Prior to joining UNL, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an M.S. in Machine Learning and directs the Lab of Mobility AI and Resilient Systems (MARS).
The seminar will be held from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Central Time on Friday, October 16, 2026. In-person attendance is available in Kiewit Hall Room A510, Lincoln, with a remote viewing location at Peter Kiewit Institute Room 160, Omaha, and external guests may join via Zoom.
