Fall 2023 Director's Message

Nathan Huynh

Welcome to the December issue of our newsletters, where we proudly showcase the expertise and impactful work of NTC-affiliated faculty and students in the area of infrastructure resilience. In this issue, we are excited to share the work of Mr. Todd Litman who gave guest lectures and a workshop to practitioners and students in Lincoln and Omaha, as well as the latest news from the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility.

As I reflect on my first year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I am genuinely impressed by the dedication and achievements of my colleagues. In late September, we updated our NTC by the Numbers and I am delighted to report another record-breaking year. We currently have 49 active research projects that total more than $11 million. These numbers make us one of the largest transportation centers in the region. Most importantly, these projects allow us to train and develop the next generation of transportation engineers, scientists, and researchers. Among these, 29 students—15 with financial support from NTC—will be attending the TRB Annual Meeting in January 2024. They will be joined by 24 UNL faculty and research staff. Collectively, UNL faculty, research staff, and students will contribute to 31 technical presentations, workshops, and committees at TRB showcasing the depth and breadth of our contributions to the field. For a comprehensive list of presentations, please visit our center’s website.

Beyond research and education, NTC is making a significant impact by collaborating with stakeholders in Nebraska and in the region to advance affordable, domestic transportation fuels, energy efficient mobility systems, and other fuel-saving technologies and practices. Proudly, NTC is now the host organization of the newly designated U.S. Department of Energy Nebraska Clean Cities coalition. Our mission aims to strengthen the nation's environment, energy security, and economic prosperity by working locally to advance the affordable, convenient, and energy-efficient movement of people and goods. I invite you to explore the vision and mission of Clean Cities and consider partnering with us at the next available funding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our respective communities.

As we conclude this year, I extend my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the success of NTC. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season and looking forward to the continued growth and impact of our center in the coming year.
