Dr. Chung Song’s project “Erosion Resistant Rock Shoulder” looked at the effect of flooding and climate change on highway shoulder rocks by testing and developing new methods to evaluate erosion resistance.

Dr. Steven Corns’s research developed deep learning models to predict river gauge heights in unmonitored locations in Missouri. By using publicly available data from 20 different catchment areas. His project formed a model to efficiently and accurately predict river water level values up to four hours ahead of a flooding event.

In his project titled “Nebraska Balanced Mix Design”, Dr. Hamzeh Haghshenas Fatmehsari worked to develop a preliminary framework for evaluating asphalt mixtures against three main types of distresses, namely rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture susceptibility.

In “A Machine Learning-Based System for Predicting Peak Flowrates of Nebraska Streams”, Dr. Tirthankar Roy addresses the outdated regression equations used to calculate flood attributes in Nebraska basins.

Dr. Christine Wittich joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in January 2017 and established her lab focused on structural engineering for natural hazards and extreme events. She teaches courses in structural engineering, structural dynamics, steel design, and infrastructure assessment techniques.
