As part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s MLK Week observance, the University honored individuals who have contributed to UNL communities and whose actions have aligned with the goals and vision of Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Judi gaiashkibos is one of this year's recipients, nominated as "a kind, humble and influential community leader."

Judi gaiashkibos is the Director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, a center working with the government and educators to advocate for the needs of Nebraska tribes and Native American citizens. It’s mission is “to do all things which it may determine to enhance the cause of Indian rights and to develop solutions to problems common to all Nebraska Indians.” gaiashkibos is an enrolled member of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. The Office of Research and Economic Development recognized her position as a “trailblazer” and “relentless in their commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence and modeling of the ideals espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” in her partnership with many at the University.

gaiashkibos is an active affiliate to the Nebraska Transportation Center by participating in our outreach programs with Native youth in Nebraska. She often joins the Native Youth Summer Leadership Academy for some of their activities and talks to the students about their future education. During the Tribal Colleges and Universities Scholars Program she shares her experiences with students looking to transition from a two-year tribal college to a four-year institution. She has spoken during the program’s formal dinner about her life experiences and hardships she has had to overcome to get where she is at today.

The awards were presented during the University’s MLK Commemorative Celebration on January 19.
