railroad

Railways are a key mover of freight across Nebraska, the Midwest and North America. Nebraska is home to the world's largest railroad classification yard and to Union Pacific railroad, which covers 23 states across the Western United States. Some Nebraska towns see over one hundred trains pass through daily, making railroad grade crossing safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians a top priority for NTC researchers. The Federal Railway Administration (FRA) has sponsored several NTC research projects.

NTC's innovative researchers are on the cutting edge by using Intelligent Transportation Systems to control roadway traffic at intersections with railroad crossings. As freight transport becomes further characterized by intermodal operations, NTC faculty members are also working to improve safety and logistics at rail-truck intermodal facilities.
