The robustness of America's economy depends on the safe and efficient movement of freight across the nation. Nearly every industry relies on freight to move and sell their goods-from agriculture to mining to manufacturing. Freight research at NTC focuses on improving the safety of commercial vehicle operators and other drivers by finding ways to prevent crashes and fatalities.
Sustainability is another essential focus of freight research at NTC. Our researchers have pioneered innovations that mitigate the impact of heavy trucks to pavement and bridges structures, which will minimize future maintenance and replacement costs. Projects focusing on environmental sustainability have included major initiatives to equip freight trucks with auxiliary power units that help to reduce diesel emissions caused by idling, while also cutting fuel costs. NTC's freight research aims to help carriers in Nebraska stay competitive and continue as a strong component of the local economy. This confluence of mutual interest has led to strong industry partnerships between local freight carriers and the Nebraska Transportation Center.
